Small Wander

The Miniature Mountain Way

West Face, Wujisungshan, Branksome, Dorset

The rocks and mountains of the Chinese garden are not intended simply as sources of aesthetic pleasure but also as prompters of flexibility of visual experience in daily life.

‘Letting one’s spirit wander’ in a miniature landscape is possible on the basis of a retrieval of the flexibility of viewpoint and scale that most people enjoy as children.

Wujisungshan (Aerial View)

Wujisungshan or ‘Primordial Pine Mountain’ is the most venerable of xiaoshan I have encountered thus far in my wanderings at 140 million years of age. Tranquil Cloud Pavilion built close to the summit is of unknown origin.
